3-Way Ball Valve Flow Configurations
The ABVS3TL/9M is available with L-Port or T-Port ball configurations for automated flow switching, diverting, mixing and proportional flow distribution.
L-Port Configuration
An L-Port ball provides a connection between two of the three valve ports, allowing flow to be directed between alternative flow paths.
Typical applications include:
✓ Diverting Water Between Two Outlets
✓ Selecting Alternative Flow Paths
✓ Automated Distribution Systems
✓ HVAC Flow Switching
✓ Water Treatment Equipment
T-Port Configuration
A T-Port ball incorporates a three-way internal passage, providing additional flow routing arrangements depending on the ball orientation.
Available T-Port flow arrangements:
- Flow D – Standard
- Flow A
- Flow B
- Flow E
Depending on the selected configuration, T-Port valves can provide:
✓ Flow Mixing
✓ Flow Diverting
✓ Multi-Port Flow Distribution
✓ Automated Process Routing
✓ Proportional Flow Distribution
The required flow configuration should be specified when ordering.
**Important:** L-Port and T-Port configurations have different internal flow paths. Not every flow arrangement permits the same mixing, diverting or intermediate-position operation. Customers should confirm the required port connections and flow diagram before ordering.

Modulating Control & Position Feedback
The ABVS3TL/9M supports proportional valve positioning using industrial analogue control signals.
The actuator adjusts the 3-way ball position according to the selected control input, allowing intermediate positioning between its programmed operating limits.
This enables automated regulation of flow distribution where supported by the selected L-Port or T-Port configuration.
Available Control Inputs
✓ 4–20mA – Standard stocked configuration
✓ 0–5V – Optional
✓ 0–10V – Optional
✓ 1–5V – Special-order matched input/output configuration
Valve Position Feedback
✓ 4–20mA proportional feedback with 4–20mA control input
✓ 4–20mA proportional feedback with 0–5V control input
✓ 4–20mA proportional feedback with 0–10V control input
✓ Optional matching 1–5V input and 1–5V feedback version
The 4–20mA feedback signal allows compatible PLC, BMS and industrial control systems to monitor actual actuator position independently of the selected control input.
A matching 0–5V input/output configuration is not available.
Electrical Wiring & Signal Connections
Power Supply
RED Wire – Positive 12–24V DC supply
BLACK Wire – Negative DC supply / common
Modulating Control Input
GREEN Wire – Positive analogue control input
BLUE Wire – Signal common / negative
Input signal depends on the selected actuator configuration.
Proportional Position Feedback
WHITE Wire – Positive analogue position feedback output
BLUE Wire – Signal common / negative
Standard Feedback Output: 4–20mA
Special-order matching 1–5V input/output configuration available.
Actuator Fault-Status Output
YELLOW Wire – NPN switching fault-status output
Normal Operation: Yellow output electrically connected to black common.
Valve Blocked: Yellow output disconnected from black common.
This output provides a switching indication for compatible PLC, BMS and external monitoring circuits.
The yellow wire is not a proportional position feedback signal. Electrical output ratings and external circuit requirements should be confirmed before connection.
Modulating Performance
Operating Time: Approximately 12 seconds for 90° travel
Positioning Range: 0–90°
Position Resolution: 75 individual positioning steps
Step Resolution: 1.2° nominal
Continuous Duty: 100%
The actuator provides intermediate valve positioning in response to the applied analogue control signal.
For 3-way valves, actual flow distribution depends on the internal ball drilling, selected flow configuration, pressure differential and valve position.
Intermediate positioning does not necessarily produce a linear relationship between control signal and flow rate.
Optional Failsafe Return
The ABVS3TL/9M Series is available with an optional failsafe modulating actuator using the ABV/9MAR configuration.
✓ Automatic return to a predetermined safe valve position following loss of electrical power
✓ 4–20mA control with 4–20mA position feedback – standard stocked failsafe configuration
✓ Optional 0–5V or 0–10V control with 4–20mA feedback – available to special order
✓ Suitable for applications requiring additional process protection
The required failsafe position, port configuration and operating arrangement must be specified when ordering.
For 3-way valves, the failsafe position must be checked against the selected L-Port or T-Port flow diagram to ensure the correct ports are connected or isolated following power failure.
