The Rotex 20101 is an ATEX and IECEx Ex ia intrinsically safe high-pressure solenoid valve designed for hazardous-area applications requiring low-power electrical control combined with direct-acting operation at pressures up to 150 Bar.
Featuring a 2/2 way normally closed, direct-acting design, the valve operates without a minimum pressure differential and can control applications ranging from high vacuum through to positive pressures of 150 Bar, depending on the selected orifice.
Standard construction uses a 316 stainless steel CF8 body with stainless steel internals, with brass or aluminium body options available. The Rotex 20101 combines bubble-tight shut-off, 9G vibration resistance, switching speeds up to 1000 cycles per minute and a life expectancy exceeding 10 million cycles.
Valve Function & Operation
Function: 2/2 way normally closed
Operation: Direct acting
The Rotex 20101 remains closed when the solenoid is de-energised and opens when the intrinsically safe electrical signal is applied.
Its direct-acting construction means the valve does not require upstream pressure or a minimum differential pressure to operate.
Operating pressure:
0 to 150 Bar depending on orifice
This makes the valve particularly useful for applications where pressure may fall to zero or where conventional pilot-operated high-pressure valves would be unsuitable.
High Vacuum to High Pressure
The Rotex 20101 provides an unusually broad operating envelope:
High vacuum: Down to 10⁻⁶ Torr
Positive pressure: Up to 150 Bar
Maximum allowable pressure depends on the selected orifice and valve configuration.
This combination of high-vacuum capability, zero differential operation and high positive pressure makes the valve suitable for demanding process and instrumentation applications.
Ports & Connections
Available BSP connections:
1/8" BSP
1/4" BSP
3/8" BSP
1/2" BSP
Optional NPT threads are available.
Orifice & Flow Options
Available orifices:
0.8mm
1.2mm
1.6mm
1.8mm
2.2mm
2.5mm
3.0mm
3.5mm
4.0mm
5.0mm
Water flow: 0.5 to 7 L/min at 1 Bar pressure drop
Both maximum pressure and flow depend on the selected orifice, so the required pressure, flow and connection size should be considered together when specifying the valve.
Construction & Materials
Standard body:
316 stainless steel CF8
Optional body materials:
Brass
Aluminium
Internals:
Stainless steel
Shading ring:
Copper standard
Silver optional
Without shading ring optional
The standard 316 stainless steel construction provides a robust option for demanding industrial and hazardous-area process installations.
Seal & Media Compatibility
Available seals:
NBR
FKM (Viton®)
EPDM
PTFE / FKM
Hytrel
Suitable media include:
High vacuum
Air
Water
Gases
Compatible process fluids
The appropriate body and seal combination should be selected according to the medium, pressure, temperature and chemical compatibility requirements of the application.
Performance & Reliability
The Rotex 20101 combines intrinsically safe electrical operation with impressive mechanical performance:
Bubble-tight shut-off
Vibration resistance: Up to 9G
Maximum cycling: 1000 cycles/minute
Life expectancy: >10 million cycles
These characteristics make the valve suitable for high-cycle automated applications as well as conventional process control.
Low-Power Ex ia Solenoid
Coil: Rotex III 14mm
Nominal voltage: 24V DC
Operating power: 2.3 Watts
Booster circuit: 8 Watts
Insulation: Class H
Protection: IP67
The integrated booster circuit provides increased power during initial valve actuation while allowing the intrinsically safe operator to function at its lower operating power.
Electrical entry options:
1/2" NPT
M20 × 1.5
Entry orientation: Bottom entry

The Ga and Da equipment protection levels make the operator suitable for very high levels of hazardous gas and dust protection when correctly incorporated into a compliant intrinsically safe system.
Intrinsically Safe Parameters
Minimum operating parameters:
Voltage: 10V
Current: 20mA
Power: 0.20W
Entity parameters:
Ui: 32V DC
Ii: 230mA
Pi: 2.3W
Li: 0
Ci: 0
The associated intrinsically safe barrier or galvanic isolator must be selected to comply with these certified entity parameters while also providing the minimum electrical requirements necessary for reliable valve operation.
Typical Applications
The Rotex 20101 is particularly suited to hazardous-area high-pressure process systems, instrumentation, compressed gas control, vacuum systems, oil and gas installations, chemical and petrochemical plants, refineries, process skids, test equipment and other applications requiring intrinsically safe control from vacuum through to high pressure.
Why Choose the Rotex 20101?
The major advantage of the Rotex 20101 is the combination of Ex ia intrinsic safety, direct-acting zero-differential operation and pressures up to 150 Bar.
It provides an intrinsically safe alternative to an Ex d high-pressure valve where electrical energy must be limited at the hazardous-area device rather than contained within a flameproof enclosure.
The standard 316 stainless steel body, ten available orifice sizes, high-vacuum capability, 9G vibration resistance and >10 million cycle life provide considerable flexibility for demanding process applications.
